If you carry ads from one search engine, will it hurt you in others?
Are major search engines going to favor web sites that carry their ads and hurt those that don't?
I just got an email from a company that I am an affiliate of and it got me thinking. To show that this is not just another affiliate-driven blog post, the link to the site is here: http://www.adsensecloaker.com/. And that is not an affiliate link or a site that I am connected with.
The idea behind this product is that it "cloaks" your AdSense code if a competing site's spider visits. I guess there has been some talk about Yahoo dropping sites if they find AdSense code listed. While I don't think that is true, it would not surprise me to hear that MSN is doing something like that...!
But with more sites playing catch-up to Google.com, it should raise the specter of the competition for advertisers being a factor on who gets traffic. Man, I never saw this coming and I hope they can keep it clean and not put us all through this kind of crap. Yes, it would hurt my sites if Yahoo sent me less traffic, but if I can confirm that this happens because I am not running their Johnny-come-lately ads on my site, I will do everything I can to fight back and discredit them, Microsoft, or any other site that has that policy.
My plan has been and at this point still is to sign up with Yahoo and MSN to try out their programs just as I have with AdSense. I would HOPE that they can all live together on the same page and that Google will relax their rules about this, but if not, I may pull AdSense from some of my sites so I can try the other programs.
A warning to all ad network providers: Don't bite the hand that feeds you, or may feed you in the future. It is short-sighted and un-professional. If you can't compete head to head, you have already lost the game.

Since first posting ( 9/14/2005 - Are major search engines going to favor web sites that carry their ads and hurt those that don't?) about the idea that some search engines may be favoring sites that carry their own ads, which was an idea brought to my attention by a site that offers a cloaking product to hide ad code from search engines, I have been contacted by one person that has confirmed that it seems like this may be true. They are going to provide some additional testing and let me know if they can offer additional evidence.
I'm not going to mention what site this is so that the results of their test cannot be affected by someone reading about the testing.
If you have seen something like this, either before or after hearing about it, please let me know so we can increase awareness on this issue.
